Department of Commerce

History    

The Department of Commerce was established in 1977-78 to offer the Pre-Degree Course in Commerce, and this was followed by the starting of the degree course in Commerce in 1979-80.  The department now functions on modern standards with excellent academic infrastructure and research facilities.

Infrastructure

The department has a computer with internet facility along with a laser printer, a departmental library with over 750 books and all other modern facilities required for the conducting courses up to the PG level.

Activities

The students of the department have consistently performed well in the University examinations. Midhun Mohan (2008) secured First Rank and Ambili (2004) got Fifth Rank in in Kerala University B Com Degree Examinations.

The department has been conducting seminars and workshops on a regular basis during the last few years. The Faculty regularly participates in seminars/workshops and present research papers and publish them in research Journals including the one published by the college.

In August 2008, the department conducted a Regional Seminar on ‘Commerce Education in India’, with the keynote address being delivered by Prof. P. Haridas.

The Seminar on ‘Entrepreneurship Development’ conducted in December 2009 was inaugurated by The Chief Manager of SBT, Punalur.

 Sri. Joe Scaria, Senior Correspondent of Economic Times spoke on the topic ‘What is the second decade of 21st century holding for Chindia (China and India) ?’ in a seminar conducted on the 27th of January 2011.

A seminar on the topic ‘students awareness Programmes’ was organized on the 10th of December 2011, by the department. Sri. CS harikrishnan (Chairman, ICSI Chapter, Thiruvananthapuram) and CS Vimal (Company Secretary) were the speakers.

Continuous assessments of students are being done based on attendance, marks scored in seminars and assignments, performance in test papers etc. Apart from the mid-term and model examinations monthly and class test papers are regularly given.
