HISTORY & PROFILE



     Sree Narayana College, Punalur established by the S. N. Trusts, Kollam in reverential memory of the saint, philosopher and social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru effectively serves the educational and intellectual needs of the society ensconced in the eastern niche of Kollam district. The College was officially inaugurated by Sri. R. Sankar, the former Chief Minister of Kerala on 15 July 1965. The first Principal of the College was the noted social scientist Dr. P. Vijayaraghavan. Nestling in a verdant hillock of twenty five acres, the College comes alive to the sound of hundreds of young men and women ascending their temple of learning and enlightenment. The College celebrated its 50 years pursuit of glory and excellence in 2016.

     Named after the great seer, mystic poet and social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru, the vision and mission of the college are pertained to the wordings of the great philosopher. Imbibing the teachings and thoughts of Guru and upholding Guru’s words, “One Caste, One Religion, One God for Man”, the institution disseminates the idea of Love , Brotherhood and Humanity among its students. The institution plays an inevitable role in educating the youth and bringing themselves into the Knowledge of Enlightenment.

     The College offers Degree courses in Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Mathematics, Commerce, History, Economics and English and Communicative English. At the post-graduate level, the college offers M.Sc in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and World History & Historeography. The college has been reaccredited by NAAC with grade B in 2014. It is also supported by the DST FIST programme and RUSA. Besides the regular university Degree, the College conducts myriad certificate and add-on courses for the all round development of the students. Various clubs and study centres function to encourage and nurture the aesthetic and literary talents of its members. A multi-gymnasium has been set up in the college for the development of physical prowess and sporting talents. The college secures remarkable position in academics and athletics in University of Kerala. A well established PTA and FSA function and support the College. Conscious of its inceptional obligation, it takes education to the doorsteps of the poor and marginalized sections of society and endeavours to mould a humane, intellectually progressive, morally awakened and socially committed group of young men and women.

Founder

     Sri.R.Shankar, the founder of Sree Narayana Colleges was the third Chief Minister of Kerala. He was born to Raman and Kunjaliamma on 30 April 1909 in Kuzhikkalidavaka village in Puthoor, Kollam district. He did his formal education in the Puthoor Primary School and later continued in an English School in Kottarakkara. In 1924, he joined Maharajas College to gain a degree in Chemistry. He also worked as a teacher for a short span of time before he moved to the Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram in 1933.

    His appointment as principal of Sivagiri High School made him associate with the activities of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam . Having started public life as a teacher and lawyer, he was drawn to the freedom movement and became an active member of the Indian National Congress in Travancore State. During his long association with the SNDP Yogam of over 13 years, he served as its General Secretary for over a span of 10 years and President of the SN Trusts. He led the Congress party as Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President during the Vimochana Samaram (Liberation Struggle) in 1958. The Congress won the elections in 1960 under R. Sankar’s leadership and Sri. R Sankar became the Deputy Chief Minister in the Pattom Thanupillai ministry. He handled the portfolio of Finance from 1960 to 1962 when he was the Deputy CM. R. Sankar became the Chief Minister of Kerala when Pattom Thanupillai was appointed as Governor of Punjab State. He was in the chair from 26 September 1962 to 10 September 1964. Sri.R.Sankar died at the age of 63 on 7 November 1972.

    He was a distinctive personality with an inimitable style of functioning and administration. He had played a crucial role in the modernization of Kerala’s Education sector. By creating more educational facilities, he laid the foundation for new avenues for Higher Education in the state, paving the way for the socially backward classes to come into the mainstream by utilizing the oppurtunities for Higher Education. Sree Narayana Guru exhorted to get Enlightened through Education and Sri.R.Shankar laid the foundation for the sanctification of Guru’s words. Sree Narayana College, Punalur was founded by Sri.R.Shankar in 1965.
